What has happened to genuine, principled "Bible literalism" Christianity?

I don't see how religion can evolve and retain the stance that the Bible is truth, as more and more of the Bible is realised to be illogical, the word 'allegorical' is tossed about. It is hypocritical, but what can they do when even the Pope declares acceptance of some elements of evolution. Clearly they can't keep claiming that what is clear nonsense is true, so they have to adapt - and lie.
