Can I plant grass on tilled wood chips?

I moved into a house that used to be a day care, and the backyard is FILLED with wood chips galore. I want to plant grass, and have to do it by myself, and was wondering if there was a somewhat simple way of doing so. My Father in-law says to just till it in with the dirt and plant the grass on top. Can I do that? Or do I need to remove most of the chips? They are about 3-5 in. deep in some places.
